## Explorer Notes

The Dee Sanction suits a group that wants occult investigations in Tudor Europe, with vulnerable agents caught between supernatural danger and the demands of the state. Its best moments come when a useful clue, a dubious patron, and a troubling piece of magic force the party to choose what they are willing to risk.

The compact rules leave room for conversation and resourceful plans. They also ask the Game Moderator to interpret circumstances, explain consequences, and make the historical world convincing. Choose it for uneasy missions and folklore; expect more preparation and judgment than its slim rulebook might suggest.

## What The Dee Sanction is

Designed by Paul Baldowski, published digitally through Just Crunch Games and in print through All Rolled Up, [The Dee Sanction](https://www.thedeesanction.com/) is a standalone TTRPG of Elizabethan supernatural investigation. Agents work for John Dee and Francis Walsingham, serving a regime that has spared them punishment for dabbling in forbidden practices. Their official usefulness offers a precarious route toward freedom.

The setting mixes recognizable Tudor people and religious tensions with an invented dispensation allowing magic in the Crown's service. That dispensation is part of the game's alternate history, not a claim about an actual Elizabethan law. The characters' limited occult talents make them useful investigators without turning them into powerful battle magicians. Suspicion, unequal power, and uncertain loyalties matter alongside the creatures they encounter.

## Publication history and editions

Baldowski's [edition retrospective](https://www.thedeesanction.com/why-release-a-new-edition/) traces development to 2014, crowdfunding to 2020, and release to early 2021. The original book's credits specify a first printing in April 2021. Its compact format combines rules, setting guidance, adversaries, and an introductory investigation rather than requiring a separate system book.

The [Monad Edition campaign](https://www.thedeesanction.com/monad-edition-is-live-on-kickstarter/) launched in March 2025, promising expanded setting material, clearer presentation, and six new investigations. As checked on October 18, 2026, the official homepage still directs readers to late pledging; a general retail release of Monad was not verified. This profile describes the available original core game, with later designer explanations used to clarify its mechanics.

The [Monad campaign FAQ](https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/allrolledup/the-dee-sanction-monad-edition-elizabethan-supernatural-rpg/faqs) says the existing softcover remains usable and compatible, while its introductory adventure, Lost in Translation, will remain specific to that book. Buyers who want the expanded presentation should check the campaign's current fulfillment information before choosing a format. The separately published Sanction rules are not required to play The Dee Sanction.

## What you need to play

The [DriveThruRPG core listing](https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/344492/the-dee-sanction?affiliate_id=1659151) offers the original watermarked PDF. It describes a 68-page book; the downloadable file is listed as 70 pages including its accompanying material. The author's [itch.io page](https://paulbaldowski.itch.io/the-dee-sanction?ac=YUqaLN4pVvG) also sells the PDF, and [All Rolled Up lists the softcover](https://www.allrolledup.co.uk/product/the-dee-sanction-core-book-softcover/). Store prices and regional shipping should be checked at purchase.

Play needs a Game Moderator, one or more other participants, character records, and polyhedral dice from d4 through d12; the book also supports ordinary playing cards. The official sample is a preview, not a complete free quickstart. For a first session, the publisher's [five pregenerated agents](https://www.thedeesanction.com/pre-generated-characters/) reduce setup and give players concrete examples of occupations and abilities.

## Adventures and useful supplements

Lost in Translation, included in the original core, provides a ready investigation adapted by Baldowski from Graham Ward's work. It gives the group a shared starting situation and lets the GM learn the procedures through a prepared case.

[The Dee Sanction: Adventures](https://www.allrolledup.co.uk/product/the-dee-sanction-adventures-2/), by Paul Baldowski and Richard August, collects six investigations in a 48-page book. They range across London and the countryside: Ex Libris concerns a sought-after book, The Monk's Cowl sends agents toward a threat in Waltham Forest, and In Fertile Soil asks them to investigate a witchcraft accusation. The collection is a practical next step for a GM who likes the premise but does not want to invent every case.

Other support has narrower purposes. [The Sight](https://www.allrolledup.co.uk/product/the-dee-sanction-the-sight/) adds unusual supernatural character possibilities. [The Book of Days](https://www.allrolledup.co.uk/product/the-dee-sanction-book-of-days/) provides character and investigation records. The [Ossulstone Hundred map](https://www.thedeesanction.com/the-ossulstone-hundred-digital-map/) supports adventures around Tudor London. None is necessary for the first investigation.

## Community and digital support

The publisher maintains a [third-party license](https://www.justcrunch.com/community-content/) for compatible material. Its [community adventure directory](https://www.thedeesanction.com/community-crafted-adventures/) includes Only A Fool, Buried Dreams, The Admiral's Compass, The Dead Poet, and Abaddon's Puppet. These independent investigations broaden the available scenarios; they should be distinguished from official supplements and checked individually for premise and content.

Chris Sharp maintains an [unofficial Foundry VTT system](https://foundryvtt.com/packages/dee) with Baldowski's permission. The listing provides sheets and system support and says a copy of the rules is still required. At the check date it listed version 6.0.1, requiring Foundry 13 or newer and verified for version 14. This is useful support for online play, not a licensed bundle containing every adventure.

## Core rules and the investigation loop

Characters use three broad Resources: Physicall, Intellectuall, and Supernaturall. Each has a die size, and circumstances change that die rather than asking players to add many numerical modifiers. In the designer's [explanation of the resolution system](https://www.thedeesanction.com/dice-mechanics-and-design/), a result of 3 or more succeeds, while 1 or 2 produces a Falter: a complication, cost, or deterioration that moves events forward.

A better approach, relevant equipment, or helpful circumstances can step the die up; disadvantage can step it down. If the situation pushes below d4, the Call to Fail asks whether the agent proceeds knowing things will go badly. This gives the GM a useful conversation before the roll: what is the agent doing, what supports that approach, and what might the attempt cost?

A typical mission therefore moves from a briefing to enquiries, contact with witnesses or suspects, preparation, and confrontation with the problem behind the clues. The party may discover that identifying a danger is easier than being ready to deal with it. Gathering the right knowledge or help becomes part of resolving the case.

## Characters, abilities, and continuing agents

Agents are classless. Occupation, association, and occult focus contribute to their background and capabilities. Baldowski's [guide to abilities](https://www.thedeesanction.com/playing-with-abilities/) describes generating eight possibilities and selecting three. An ability is broad expertise that must make sense in the situation: it might remove a need to roll, improve the die, cancel a disadvantage, or permit an otherwise implausible attempt.

That arrangement rewards players who explain how a former livelihood or unusual interest helps now. It also needs a shared standard of generosity. If one player's ability works in every scene while another's is interpreted narrowly, the GM should pause and make the expectations clearer. The aim is meaningful fictional expertise, not a contest over persuasive wording.

The core includes guidance for troupe play, allowing a wider retinue of agents to support continuing investigations. For campaign planning, the clearest attraction is the history accumulated through assignments, contacts, and consequences. Readers looking primarily for an elaborate level-by-level character build should inspect the core before buying; this profile does not assume a detailed advancement ladder.

## Tradecraft and supernatural threats

Tradecraft gives the group access to shared capabilities beyond individual abilities. The designer's [Tradecraft clarification](https://www.thedeesanction.com/tradecraft-marks-the-spot/) explains both ordinary support and its relationship to Marks: requirements that must be addressed before a significant threat can be overcome. Resources such as special equipment, access to people, or magical knowledge can become necessary parts of an investigation.

The important distinction is between finding a threat and having the means to finish the job. A group may need another contact, a specific object, or a later return with better preparation. The designer recommends making useful information available through handlers and briefings; choosing the wrong Tradecraft should not feel like punishment for failing to guess the GM's private solution.

At the table, this creates a reason to discuss the mission before rushing into danger. It also gives a campaign unfinished business: an agent can know exactly what haunts a place while still needing help to remove it.

## Danger, conflict, and consequences

Combat uses the same general challenge approach rather than a separate tactical engine. [Rolling Boxcars' rules review](https://rollingboxcars.wordpress.com/2021/07/29/for-the-defense-of-the-realm-the-dee-sanction/) describes short Moments in which players state goals and resolve attacks and defenses. Hits track physical survival, while Consequences can create conditions that last beyond the immediate exchange. Unravelling addresses the effects of encountering unnatural horrors.

These pressures suit agents who prefer preparation, negotiation, and escape to fair fights. A confrontation can still be dramatic, but the game's appeal is the situation and its fallout. Players seeking detailed movement grids, extensive combat options, or carefully balanced encounters should look elsewhere.

## Running a session or campaign

The GM's main work is preparing a comprehensible mystery and making its costs matter. Start with a clear assignment, people who want different outcomes, and several useful things the agents can learn. Know which obstacles need ordinary ingenuity and which supernatural threats have special requirements. Give handlers enough information to make the Tradecraft choice meaningful.

The rules are light, but the setting and open interpretation place demands on the facilitator. [Geek Native's played review](https://www.geeknative.com/137072/slightly-supernatural-a-review-of-the-dee-sanction/) describes looking up historical context while appreciating the compact system. Our assessment is medium preparation: a published scenario helps considerably, but does not remove the need to read it, establish tone, and understand its clues.

One-shots work well with a bounded assignment and the official pregenerated characters, which the designer explicitly recommends for convention play. Recurring missions can build a longer campaign around returning agents and unresolved dangers. Begin with a short arc to discover whether the group enjoys negotiating abilities and managing the gap between understanding a threat and being able to defeat it.

## Reception and awards

The Dee Sanction won the Judges' Award for Best Role-playing Game at [UK Games Expo 2021](https://www.ukgamesexpo.co.uk/content/news/award-winners-uk-games-expo-2021/). The Adventures collection subsequently won the People's Choice award for Best Role-Playing Game Adventure at UK Games Expo 2022, as recorded in the [publisher's award announcement](https://www.thedeesanction.com/the-peoples-choice-of-adventures/).

Reviews commonly value the combination of a specific historical premise and compact rules, but differ over how much interpretation the book leaves to the GM. [Taskerland's review](https://tasker.land/2023/06/27/review-the-dee-sanction/) praises its evocative economy while questioning the clarity of Tradecraft and its suitability for inexperienced facilitators. A [Tabletop Gaming review](https://pocketmags.com/au/tabletop-gaming-magazine/january-2025-98/articles/the-dee-sanction) highlights the immersive effect of its writing despite a familiar broad premise. These are useful judgments about different tables, not proof that everyone finds the game equally easy to run.

On October 18, 2026, the live DriveThruRPG listing displayed 4.8/5 from 19 ratings, with one written review. That is a favorable but small sample. A review describing solo use relied on an external oracle; it does not establish a native solo mode in the core game.

## Where it is strongest

- Groups interested in Tudor occult investigations with compromised protagonists and difficult patrons.

- Players who like making a background or an unusual ability relevant through a concrete plan.

- GMs who want concise rules and prepared mysteries, with space to interpret outcomes.

- Short assignments that can accumulate into a campaign of recurring contacts and unfinished threats.

## Where it can frustrate groups

- Tradecraft and special threat requirements can feel opaque unless the GM explains their function and supplies useful clues.

- A small rulebook does not guarantee effortless preparation or a fully scripted teaching experience.

- Historical atmosphere may invite research; agree how strictly the table wants to follow real events.

- Fragile, coerced agents are a poor fit for players seeking uncomplicated heroic freedom or extensive combat builds.

## Content and tone

The premise includes threatened execution, religious persecution, coercive government service, occult horror, and violence. Individual scenarios can add child death or witchcraft accusations; the Adventures collection's descriptions make those concerns explicit. Before play, agree which material belongs onstage, which stays in the background, and how anyone can pause or redirect a scene. Treat the period's prejudices as material to examine thoughtfully, not a requirement to reproduce them at the table.

## A practical starting path

Read the official core preview to check the voice and premise, then choose the [available original core PDF](https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/344492/the-dee-sanction?affiliate_id=1659151) or its print counterpart. Use the pregenerated agents and Lost in Translation for a first investigation. Read the designer's ability and Tradecraft explanations before running it, then consider Adventures if the group wants more cases. Check Monad's current status separately if expanded setting detail is your main reason for buying.

## Research notes

Last checked October 18, 2026. This is a researched reference and table-fit assessment, not a claim of firsthand play. Availability and rating observations refer to that date; Monad retail availability was not confirmed. Preparation, complexity, and table-fit scores are editorial assessments. No reliable fixed maximum group size, setup time, or session-length range was established, so those fields are left unspecified.
