## Explorer Notes

Hunter: The Reckoning is the World of Darkness TTRPG for groups who want to play ordinary people who have seen a monster and decided to do something about it. In the current fifth edition (often called H5) the hunters are human, the cell is small and underfunded, and every hunt follows the same tense arc: find the threat, learn what hurts it, and strike before it notices you. It works best for modern horror campaigns about investigation, preparation and the cost of obsession.

It is a poor fit if you want superpowered monster slayers, tactical grid combat, or the original 1999 game's Imbued hunters with supernatural Edges. Fans of that edition often say H5 feels like a different game wearing the old name, and that criticism comes up in most discussions of it.

## What the game is

Hunter: The Reckoning is a horror TTRPG set in the World of Darkness, the same secret world of vampires, werewolves, ghosts and sorcerers as [Vampire: The Masquerade](/item/vampireofthemasquerade) and [Werewolf: The Apocalypse](/item/werewolf). Players are hunters: people who saw something they could not explain away and organized into a cell to fight back. One player is the Storyteller, who runs the world, the monsters and the organizations that also hunt them.

The fifth edition core rulebook is credited to Justin Achilli (creative lead), Daniel Braga, Johnathan Byerly, Edward Austin Hall, Karim Muammar, Mario Ortegón, Pam Punzalan and Erin Roberts, with an Advice for Considerate Play appendix by Jacqueline Bryk. Paradox Interactive's World of Darkness team developed it and [Renegade Game Studios](https://renegadegamestudios.com/hunter-the-reckoning/) published it.

The default play identity is street-level. The book compares a cell to a start-up: a few people with different skills, a shared purpose and very little backing. The big government, church and corporate groups that hunt monsters (the book calls them orgs) are usually rivals or secondary antagonists, not employers.

## Publication history and editions

White Wolf Publishing released the first Hunter: The Reckoning in November 1999 as the sixth main World of Darkness game. In that version the hunters were Imbued, people touched by mysterious Messengers who gave them supernatural Edges and sorted them into nine creeds such as Avengers, Defenders and Redeemers. The line ran through a long series of creed books and monster sourcebooks until the Time of Judgment event closed the old World of Darkness in 2004. It also inspired three High Voltage Software video games in 2002 and 2003, which still crowd search results for the name.

The fifth edition was announced in October 2021 and released in 2022: the PDF reached buyers in June, it was added to DriveThruRPG on July 26, 2022, and the hardcover reached shops that autumn. It uses the Vampire: The Masquerade fifth edition engine. The biggest change is that hunters are no longer Imbued. Most are plain humans, and the supernatural Edges that remain are optional Endowments. The core book was nominated for Best Rules at the 2023 ENnie Awards; it did not win.

A separate game, Hunter: The Vigil, belongs to the Chronicles of Darkness line from Onyx Path and is not covered here. The newer Hunter: The Reckoning video games, including [Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish](https://store.steampowered.com/app/4434610/Hunter_The_Reckoning__Deathwish/) on Steam, are also separate products.

## Publisher change at the end of 2026

Buyers should know about one current change. On September 30, 2026, [Renegade announced](https://renegadegamestudios.com/blog/an-update-on-renegade-and-world-of-darkness/) that its World of Darkness publishing partnership ends at the end of 2026. Renegade says it will keep selling the books through December 31, 2026 while supplies last, and that previously bought Renegade PDFs stay in customers' order histories. From 2027 White Wolf, the Paradox studio, brings tabletop publishing in-house. White Wolf has announced a new edition of Vampire: The Masquerade but, as of November 3, 2026, has not said whether it will reprint or revise Hunter. If you want the current print book, buy it soon.

## What you need to play

You need the 285-page [Hunter: The Reckoning 5th Edition Core Rulebook](https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/404271/hunter-the-reckoning-5th-edition-roleplaying-game-core-rulebook?affiliate_id=1659151) and a handful of ten-sided dice. As of November 3, 2026 the watermarked PDF lists at $38.50 on DriveThruRPG and the full-color hardcover lists at $55 on Renegade's store. The core book covers character creation, Edges and equipment, rules, Storyteller advice, sample supernatural threats and a chapter of rival organizations, so one book is enough for a full campaign.

Renegade has also sold bundles that pair the core book with a Storyteller Screen Kit, a dice set and the short adventure His Last Trick. Optional extras include a fillable character sheet and the Hunter dice set, but ordinary d10s work fine.

## Supplements

The fifth edition line is small. Renegade has published Lines Drawn in Blood (2023), a chronicle book of linked hunts; Alma Maters (2024), about hunting through universities and academic research; Incognito Report (2025), a sourcebook framed around an informant called Cog; Apostates (2025), for hunters who left the orgs; and Legacy of Defiance (2026), with lineages of hunter traditions. Renegade's organized play program also released short adventures such as Cold Case, Monster Hunting 101 and Life Imitates Art. None of these are required.

## Core rules and play structure

Hunter uses the fifth edition Storyteller dice pool. To act, you add an Attribute (such as Strength or Wits) to a Skill (such as Firearms or Investigation) and roll that many d10s. Each die showing 6 or higher is a success, and you need as many successes as the difficulty. Pairs of 10s count as extra successes for a critical. Characters track Health and Willpower; Willpower lets you reroll dice and resist fear or mind control.

The game is built around the hunt. A story usually opens with a hint that something is wrong, moves into investigation and preparation as the cell learns what the quarry is and what hurts it, and ends in a confrontation. Monsters use simplified stat blocks with general dice pools plus specific abilities and weaknesses, so discovering a weakness (fire, silver, a ritual, an unfinished promise) is how ordinary people win fights they would otherwise lose. Exploiting that weakness is often the only way to deal lasting, aggravated damage to a monster.

## Characters and advancement

Character creation starts with why the hunter fights. Each hunter picks a Creed, which describes how they approach the hunt, and a Drive, the personal reason they keep going, such as curiosity, vengeance or envy. The five Creeds in the core book are:

- Entrepreneurial: builders, fixers and inventors who keep the cell funded and equipped.

- Faithful: hunters driven by religious or spiritual conviction.

- Inquisitive: researchers who need to understand the monster before facing it.

- Martial: fighters, ex-soldiers and anyone who prefers to act now.

- Underground: hunters working from the criminal or social margins.

Hunters also get Edges, which come in three families. Assets are reliable access to gear such as weapons, vehicles or a lab. Aptitudes are specialist talents like improvised gear, computer access, drone piloting or animal training. Endowments are the optional supernatural ones: sensing, repelling or resisting the unnatural, or owning an artifact. Each Edge unlocks Perks that refine it. Advantages and Flaws, an Ambition and a Desire, Touchstones (people the hunter is protecting) and a relationship map finish the character. Advancement uses experience points to raise traits and buy new Edges and Perks.

## Signature mechanics

Desperation. The cell shares a Desperation rating from 1 to 5. It rises at the end of scenes when things go badly: a hunter gets hurt, the quarry escapes, or innocents suffer. When a hunter's action serves their purpose, the player can add Desperation dice to the roll. That makes success more likely, but a 1 on a Desperation die forces a cost: the hunter either Overreaches, raising Danger, or falls into Despair and loses access to Desperation until they redeem themself in a way set by their Drive.

Danger. Danger tracks how aware the quarry and its allies are of the cell. As it climbs, the Storyteller adds difficulty to rolls, more guards, faster responses and eventually direct attacks on the hunters or their Touchstones. Danger rises from Overreach and from story events, including the cell's own successes, and only falls if the hunters lie low.

Together these two trackers give the game its pace. The more desperate the cell gets, the more power it can reach for, and the more likely that power alerts the monster.

## Setting: the orgs

The setting chapter and the rival organizations chapter are where Hunter separates itself from generic monster-of-the-week games. The core book describes groups such as the FBI's Special Affairs Division, the Society of St. Leopold, the Arcanum, Brazil's BOPE-RJ, a Manila Department of Justice program, the Orpheus Group, and Re:Venge, a gig-economy app that sells revenge on monsters. Each has its own agenda. Some want to study the supernatural, some want to control it, and some will use an independent cell as bait. Playing the orgs against each other, or stealing their equipment, is a big part of a longer campaign.

## What play feels like

Sessions tend to feel like a crime or horror procedural. Hunters chase rumors, interview witnesses, break into places they shouldn't, argue about what the thing really is, and plan an ambush around the weakness they think they've found. Combat is short and dangerous, and the best fights are the ones the cell set up in advance. Over time the Desperation track and the hunters' Drives push the story toward personal cost: lost jobs, strained families and Touchstones in danger.

## Running the game

The Storyteller has a fair amount to prepare. Each hunt needs a quarry with clear abilities and weaknesses, a trail of clues, people affected by the threat, and a sense of how the monster reacts as Danger rises. The core book's Chronicle Tenets help a group agree on what the campaign is about (for example, whether innocents are off-limits), and the threats chapter gives ready-made monsters from several countries. Storytellers who already know the fifth edition Vampire or Werewolf rules will find the dice pool familiar.

A common pitfall is treating Desperation as a free bonus. Commentary from Storytellers suggests raising Desperation when the cell struggles and raising Danger when the quarry reacts, including after the hunters' wins, so both trackers keep the pressure on.

## Campaign fit

Hunter is built for ongoing chronicles where the cell grows, the orgs take notice and the hunters' lives fray. A single hunt also works as a one-shot or convention game, and Renegade's Play Renegade organized play adventures are short scenarios of that kind. Replacement characters are easy to add because a new hunter only needs a reason to join the cell. Players who move on to Vampire or Werewolf later will find the same engine and setting, but a Hunter campaign usually sees monsters from the outside, with much less of their politics.

## Reception and awards

The core book was an ENnies 2023 nominee for Best Rules. On DriveThruRPG (checked November 3, 2026) it averages 3.8 stars from 14 ratings: six five-star, three four-star, three three-star and two one-star ratings. One written review praises the clear, easy-to-reference text and the explanation of how hunter cells differ from the corrupt orgs; another, from a fan of the original game, calls it disappointing but better than expected.

[Gnome Stew's 2022 review](https://gnomestew.com/hunter-the-reckoning-review/) gave it a qualified recommendation. It liked the shift to mortal hunters, the clear rules writing, the way Desperation echoes Vampire's Hunger dice without copying them, and the orgs. It also warned that several sample threats set in poorer communities, Mexico and the Philippines could slide into savior stories without careful handling. Community threads on r/WhiteWolfRPG and r/WorldOfDarkness are split. Players who take it on its own terms like the Desperation and Danger loop and the flexible setting. Longtime fans miss the Imbued, find many Edges weak, and say the hunt loop gives every story a similar shape.

## Where it is strongest

- Investigation-first monster hunting where learning a weakness matters more than combat stats.

- Desperation and Danger trackers that build tension across a whole story.

- A setting with many rival hunting organizations to bargain with, steal from or fight.

- Human characters with personal Drives and Touchstones, which give the horror real stakes.

- A single core book that covers everything, with rules shared with Vampire and Werewolf fifth edition.

## Where it can frustrate groups

- Fans of the 1999 game will not find the Imbued, the Messengers or the nine original creeds.

- Edges can feel thin, so many hunters lean on Desperation dice to be competent.

- The hunt structure works well but can make stories feel alike over a long campaign.

- Combat is simple and lethal, with little to offer tactical players.

- Renegade stops selling the line at the end of 2026, and White Wolf's plans for Hunter are not yet public.

## Content and safety notes

Renegade labels the line with a mature advisory for violence, sexual themes and strong language. Expect murder, body horror from mutated monsters and science experiments, corrupt agencies, and threats aimed at the hunters' Touchstones and families. Several sample threats prey on migrants and people in poverty, including a scenario hook built on a migrant woman's death in childbirth. The core book's Advice for Considerate Play appendix covers safety tools, calibration and consequence systems, and it is worth reading together before the first session.

## Best starting path

Buy the core rulebook (the [DriveThruRPG PDF](https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/404271/hunter-the-reckoning-5th-edition-roleplaying-game-core-rulebook?affiliate_id=1659151) or the Renegade hardcover), read the Introduction and Chapter One for the premise, then Chapter Four for Desperation and Danger. Run one hunt from the threats chapter, or a short organized play adventure such as Cold Case, before planning a chronicle. If your group would rather play the monsters, the [World of Darkness games guide](/blog/world-of-darkness-games-explained-vampire-werewolf-mage-hunter) compares Hunter with Vampire, Werewolf and Mage. For lighter monster hunting, look at [Monster of the Week](/item/monsteroftheweek).
