# Lancer License Levels: Choose Your First Frame and Mix Your Gear

Pick a combat role, spend early license ranks to unlock a frame at LL2, and mix licensed gear within mount and SP limits.

## Article

I’d pick a combat role first, then spend my first 2 license ranks on the same mech license to get its frame at LL2. Splitting those ranks gives you more gear choices, but delays your first licensed frame until LL3 or later.

Here’s how I’d plan the build:

- Start with the [Everest](https://lancer.wiki.gg/wiki/Everest). At LL0, you have [GMS](https://lancer.wiki.gg/wiki/General_Massive_Systems) gear without spending license ranks.

- Choose your usual job. Drake suits holding ground and protecting allies; Blackbeard suits melee attacks and grappling.

- Map LL1–LL3. Each level adds 1 license rank. Check what that rank gives you and how you’ll use it.

- Check the whole frame. Look at traits, mounts, core system, movement, durability, heat capacity, and System Points (SP).

- Mix gear within the rules. Equipment from different licenses can share a build if mounts, SP, and item restrictions allow it.

My rule of thumb: plan the turn before buying the gear. A loadout should fit both your frame and what you want to do each round.

## Choose Your First Frame by Combat Role

Pick the role you want to fill every round. To protect allies, look for durability and traits that help you shield teammates. Close-range fighters need mobility and ways to survive once they get in. For battlefield control, check sensor range, tech attack, and area-control options. Ranged attackers need the right mounts and clear firing lanes. Support builds need enough System Points (SP) for systems that help allies reposition or stay alive.

### Drake vs. Blackbeard

Factor
[IPS-N Drake](https://lancer.wiki.gg/wiki/Drake)
[IPS-N Blackbeard](https://lancer.wiki.gg/wiki/Blackbeard)

Combat role and player fit
Mid- to long-range defender for players who like holding ground and protecting teammates
Melee striker and grappler for players who like chasing targets and managing risk

Durability
Guardian gives adjacent allied mechs hard cover; Blast Plating resists damage, heat, and burn from blast, line, and cone attacks
12 HP and Armor 1; can become exposed after closing in

Mobility
Limited mobility; Fortress Protocol makes it immobile
Speed 5; Grapple Cable pulls Blackbeard adjacent to a successfully grappled enemy within Range 5

Mounts
Heavy mount supports sustained-fire weapons
Main/Flex/Heavy layout supports melee and ranged weapons

Choose based on a typical turn, not just the strongest ability. Drake rewards careful positioning; Blackbeard rewards a planned approach. Before you commit to an advance, check whether your squad can back you up.

Your role tells you what to do. The stat line shows whether the frame can keep doing it.

### Review Frame Stats Before Spending Ranks

Once a frame fits your role, check whether its numbers support the job. Review traits, mounts, core system, speed, HP, armor, heat cap, and SP together. Traits provide repeatable benefits, while the core system adds a signature limited-use ability. Judge durability by HP, armor, heat cap, repairs, and defenses - not armor alone.

Check mount compatibility and SP costs before assuming your loadout will fit. If the mounts or SP won't support your planned weapons and systems, choose another frame before spending ranks.

Once you've picked a frame that suits how you want to play, plan your license ranks around its Rank II unlock.

## Plan Your License Ranks Through LL3

Lancer LL1–LL3: Frame Unlock Paths

Turn your combat role into an LL1–LL3 plan. Map your first three levels so you know when your frame unlocks and which equipment you can use along the way.

### Spend 2 Ranks to Get a Frame at LL2

Spend both early ranks on the same manufacturer license to unlock its frame at LL2. Until then, you can use its Rank I gear on the Everest.

### Split Ranks to Get More Gear First

Split your ranks only when early gear matters more than getting your frame sooner.

Putting your first two ranks into different licenses gives you gear from both, but no frame at LL2. The trade-off is simple: more equipment choices now, a later frame unlock. In the example below, Drake waits until LL3.

Route
LL1
LL2
LL3
First licensed frame

Single-license Blackbeard path
Blackbeard I: melee equipment
Blackbeard II: frame and equipment
Blackbeard III or another license’s Rank I
Blackbeard at LL2

Single-license Drake path
Drake I: protection and heavy-weapon equipment
Drake II: frame and equipment
Drake III or another license’s Rank I
Drake at LL2

Split path
Blackbeard I: melee equipment
Drake I: protection and heavy-weapon equipment
Drake II: frame and equipment
Drake at LL3

GMS gear costs zero license ranks and remains available on either route. It doesn’t replace the LL1 rank you assign to a manufacturer license. Taking a license to Rank III at LL3 adds gear, not another frame unlock.

### Write Your License Plan

Copy this short worksheet into your build notes.

Intended role: melee striker, durable frontline defender, ranged damage dealer, controller, or support

Desired frame and ranks: frame name; usually two ranks in one license

LL1: license rank, equipment gained, and its job on the Everest

LL2: license rank, equipment gained, and whether the frame unlocks

LL3: license rank and the equipment or frame it adds

Expected unlock: LL2 on a focused route; LL3 on the split route

Before assigning each rank, ask: Does this move me toward my chosen frame or meet a specific equipment need? If you choose gear first, check that it works with your current or planned frame - and that it’s worth delaying the frame.

## Mix Gear Across Licenses

Once you’ve picked a frame, use early license ranks to borrow gear from other licenses while you wait to unlock it.

Licensed gear can work across frames, but mounts, System Points (SP), and item rules determine what fits.

### Check Mounts, System Points, and Gear Rules

Equipment
Checks before installation

Weapons
Match weapon size to the mount and count any SP cost.

Systems
Keep combined weapon and system costs within your SP budget.

Tags and prerequisites
Check license access, prerequisites, and restrictions.

Limited and duplicate equipment
Track Limited uses, ammo, Unique tags, and duplicate limits.

Integrated equipment
Follow item-specific rules. Frame-locked gear stays frame-locked.

### Try 3 Early-Level Gear Combinations

Use those checks to see whether a mixed loadout is legal and worth the SP.

LL1 Everest: test melee first. Mount Blackbeard I’s Chain Axe on a main mount. Check its listed SP cost alongside your systems. Use it to test melee before committing to Blackbeard.

LL2 Drake: protect the frontline. Combine protection systems unlocked by Drake I–II with GMS weapons that fit the Drake’s mounts. Budget SP for those systems before adding extras. Pick weapons that support the position you want to hold.

LL3 Drake: add melee retaliation. With Drake I–II and Blackbeard I, fit the Chain Axe to a compatible mount and keep protection systems within your SP budget. Check how you will reach targets and how they will enter your threat range.

### Check Your Finished Build

Before spending the rank, check role and frame access, LL and total license ranks, frame stats, mount compatibility, total SP, prerequisites and tags, and Limited uses.

Then review range, action economy, mobility, heat, ammo, and survivability together before locking in the build.

## Conclusion: Plan Your Frame and Loadout

Pick your combat role first, then plan your first 2–3 ranks. At LL2, put both ranks into one license to unlock its frame. GMS gear remains available at no rank cost. You can mix it with licensed gear as long as you follow mount, SP, and item rules.

Before your next game, check one complete loadout against your role and rank plan. Make sure your choices unlock the frame you want - not just the gear.

## FAQs

### How does pilot license level differ from mech license rank?

Your pilot license level (LL) tracks your character’s overall progress and sets how many license points you can spend. Your mech license rank tracks how many of those points you’ve put into a specific mech license.

Ranks I, II, and III unlock gear and abilities from that license. Most licensed frames unlock at rank II.

### Can I change my license choices later?

Yes, you can change your license choices as you progress. Lancer lets you redesign your mech between missions, so your early license picks don’t lock you in for the whole campaign. As you gain new licenses, you get more options to adjust your build and role to fit your squad’s needs.

### How do I balance mixed gear with my frame’s role?

Choose equipment that fits your frame’s battlefield role: durable gear for frontline tanks or specialized tools for electronic warfare. When mixing weapons and systems from different licenses, check each piece against your mech’s mount capacity and system point limits.

Mix gear to build on your strengths - not water down your role - and support your squad’s needs.
